Smart Snacks Regulation Summary

The Act applies nutrition standards to all food & beverages sold to students on the school campus anytime during the school day. This includes: - School stores - Vending machines - Fundraisers like bake sales, ice cream sales, etc. A school day is defined as midnight until 30 minutes after the end of the school day.

Nutrition Standards

Food must be: - "Whole grain" rich or have a first ingredient of fruit, vegetable, dairy product, or protein. - Contain ¼ cup of fruit or vegetable. - Provide 10% Daily Value of specific nutrients, and meet calorie, sodium, fat, and sugar limits.

  • Examples that do not meet standards: chips, cookies, cake, candy, bagels, ice cream, Gatorade, Snapple, etc.
  • Examples that meet requirements: baked chips, popcorn, zero calorie flavored water, dried fruit, fig cookies, etc.

Overview

Anaphylaxis is a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. Common examples of triggers include: - Foods - Latex - Insects - Medication Exposure can lead to symptoms like difficulty breathing, hives, difficulty swallowing, or a dangerous drop in blood pressure and shock.

All staff members on campus are trained yearly to recognize a severe allergic reaction and are familiar with emergency procedures.

Tips

  • Students with food allergies should not share snacks with others.
  • Parents of students with allergies should send snacks for their student.

The School Nutrition Association, in partnership with the National Dairy Council, created a set of resources about school meals titled a Pediatrician's Perspective. Pediatrician Robert Murray (MD, FAAP) breaks down the importance of nutrients to brain and child development, and how healthy school meals build healthier students, contributing to improved educational outcomes.
